Chandramauleshwara Temple, Unkal: A Thousand-Year-Old Stone Story in the Heart of Hubli

Built ~1085 CE · Kalyana Chalukya Era · ASI Protected Monument · Shiva Temple · Unkal, Hubli

Most people who pass through Unkal remember the lake. Fewer know that just east of that water, behind the noise of NH 67, stands a temple that has been there for nearly a thousand years. The Chandramauleshwara Temple is not a large, loudly decorated pilgrimage complex. It is a compact, severely beautiful piece of 11th-century stone architecture that has outlasted empires, survived centuries of neglect, and still draws visitors who come not just to pray, but to look — and look carefully.

Built around 1085 CE during the Kalyana Chalukya period, the temple is today a Monument of National Importance, managed by the Archaeological Survey of India's Dharwad circle. It is one of the rare surviving examples of a sandhara-style temple — a plan described in ancient Sanskrit architectural texts — where the central sanctum is accessible from all four cardinal directions.

“A rare and remarkable building that illustrates the sandhara plan, with a square garbhagriha that can be accessed from four cardinal directions.”

The architecture: what makes it unusual

The temple's genius lies in its four-directional design. Most Hindu temples of this era have a single entrance, typically facing east. Chandramauleshwara was designed so that a devotee could approach Shiva from any direction — north, south, east, or west — and encounter a fully decorated doorway. The doorjambs are carved with pancha shakhas, five concentric bands of intricate sculpture, and while each door follows the same language, the craftsmen made each one distinct. The eastern door is considered particularly exceptional — scholars have described it as one of the finest doorways from the entire 11th century in Karnataka.

The outer walls are alive with carvings drawn from across the Hindu traditions. You will find Nataraja mid-dance, a dancing Ganesha, Narasimha, Sarasvati, Mahishasurmardini — not just Shaivite icons, but figures from Vaishnavism and Shaktism too. This deliberate integration of multiple traditions into a single structure is something scholars have noted as unusual, and it makes the temple an exceptionally rich surface for anyone interested in iconography.

The Chaturmukha Linga and a story of change

At the heart of the original design was a Chaturmukha Linga — a four-faced Shiva linga placed precisely at the centre of the sanctum, so that no matter which entrance a devotee used, they would face one of Shiva's aspects directly. It was a masterstroke of ritual architecture. Today, that linga has been moved to the western side of the temple. The likely explanation, according to Henry Cousens who surveyed the site for the ASI, is that the temple fell into severe disrepair after the 13th century. It was later taken over by Lingayat communities who replaced the Chaturmukha linga with a plain linga more in keeping with their tradition. The original four-faced linga now rests in the western niche — still there, still extraordinary, but no longer at the centre it was designed for.

What visitors experience today

Tripadvisor lists the Chandramauleshwara Temple at 3.9 out of 5 across 23 reviews, ranked #13 of 30 things to do in Hubli-Dharwad. The reviews reveal a consistent character: those who come knowing what they are looking at come away genuinely moved; those who stumble across it without context sometimes miss the depth entirely. Several visitors have described it as a hidden gem — significant, ancient, but not widely publicised among tourists.

Practical information before you visit

  • The temple is in the Unkal neighbourhood, east of Unakal Lake on NH 67 (Old NH4). It is easy to combine both in a single visit — the lake and temple are only minutes apart.
  • Mornings are the best time — light falls well on the carved walls and it is cooler. Midday visits in summer can be uncomfortable in the open courtyard.
  • Go slowly. The carvings reward attention. Without pausing at each wall, it is easy to underestimate what is in front of you. The eastern doorway especially deserves a close look.
  • The compound wall construction by ASI has been incomplete for years — some visitors note the surroundings feel unfinished. The temple structure itself, however, is well worth the visit regardless.
  • Remove footwear before entering, as with any active temple. The stone surface is uneven in places, so watch your step inside the circumambulation path.

Why this temple deserves more attention

Karnataka's temple trail tends to draw visitors toward Hampi, Badami, Belur, and Halebidu. Chandramauleshwara at Unkal belongs to the same architectural conversation but rarely gets the same spotlight. It is a working temple with a living community of devotees and simultaneously an exceptional piece of medieval art history, all within the city limits of Hubli. For anyone with even a passing interest in ancient India — its craftsmanship, its religious philosophy, its architectural ambition — this quiet thousand-year-old structure offers more than most people expect from a neighbourhood temple tucked behind a city lake.
